Join me for a walk around Basseterre, St. Kitts. I start just outside Port Zante and wander through the neighborhoods and the local beach, then make my way to the tourist area, Independence Square and the church next to it before heading back through the port’s shopping area.
Basseterre, St. Kitts Cruise Port and Town Walk Around
Basseterre, St. Kitts walk around from Port Zante through town neighborhoods to the local beach, a four sided clock, Independence Square and port shops.
Key Takeaways
- There were three ships in port: Explora I, Norwegian Breakaway and Brilliance of the Seas.
- Sidewalks here are only a suggestion, and there are open sewer grates and a lot of trash. They drive on the left, and people walk on that side too.
- There’s a KFC near the port, and later I spotted a Domino’s in town.
- The little town beach near the ferry terminal has grayish sand that looks like dirty ash, but the sky was beautiful.
- One block in it’s all residential, with chickens, a cat and a cool little church. It wasn’t looking too good, so I turned around.
- Things start looking better near Don Carlos Cafe and the tourist area, where there’s a clock with four different times, one on each side.
- Independence Square is a little park with old British phone booths (with no phones in them) and a fountain, and the Co Cathedral right there is a nice old church.
- The port area is probably the nicest part of the whole town, and the shopping area there has a Cuban cigar store.
Good to Know
If you want to do anything here, you definitely need to do a shore excursion. For me it was a real quick on and off the ship kind of day, and the town is not the best place for meandering around on your own.
Watch where you walk. A lot of food is sold right out on the street from pots and trays, and there are spots where you really can’t walk without stepping around sewage. Getting back into the port can be a little confusing too, since some entrances are closed off.
The good news is it wasn’t too hot and it didn’t rain the day I was there. If you just want to stretch your legs and shop, staying in Port Zante is your best bet.
