Back in January, I told you about MSC’s big plans for Freeport, including a new cruise terminal project that came with a hefty $450 million price tag. Now some more details have been released about the project. According to newly released details, MSC Group’s cruise division is moving ahead with a new MSC Beach Club in Freeport, Grand Bahama, with construction expected to begin as soon as April 12, pending environmental and regulatory approvals.

The new beach club will be developed by CTL Maritime, an MSC Group entity that specializes in cruise terminal and destination development. The company says it will acquire and redevelop a 20-acre portion of the Grand Lucayan complex, specifically the area currently occupied by The Reef Village, turning it into a purpose-built beach destination for guests sailing with MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys.

That last part is important, because this is not being pitched as just another generic beach stop. MSC is trying to build out more of its own destinations in The Bahamas, similar to what other cruise lines have been doing for years with private islands and resort-style destinations like Carnival’s Celebration Key.

Between the new Freeport Harbour cruise port project, the ongoing expansion of Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, and this new MSC Beach Club at Grand Lucayan, MSC Group’s total investment in The Bahamas is now being pegged at nearly $1.5 billion. Those combined projects are expected to generate more than 1,000 jobs and pump a lot of economic activity into the country.

If you read the original article I wrote, you already know the port itself is supposed to be open to ALL cruise lines once completed. That alone made the project a pretty big deal, since Freeport has long been a port absolutely nobody wants to visit voluntarily because there’s simply nothing to do.

What we still don’t know is what, exactly, this beach club is going to look like. So far, MSC has not shared specific guest-facing features, which means no real details yet on amenities, dining, cabanas, pools, transportation, or whether this will lean more upscale for their luxury line, Explora Journeys, while still providing something for regular MSC passengers.

By using part of the Grand Lucayan complex, MSC is tying the project to one of Grand Bahama’s best-known resort properties, one that has been talked about for years as a key part of the island’s tourism future. Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis called the agreement a “defining moment” for Grand Bahama and said the redevelopment of Grand Lucayan has long been a national priority.

From a cruise passenger perspective, this is one of those developments worth keeping an eye on, especially if you sail MSC or Explora. Ocean Cay is already getting a major expansion of its own, including more family beach areas, an adults retreat, additional restaurants and bars, and a pier extension that will allow two ships alongside by late 2027. Add a Freeport beach club to the mix, and MSC is rapidly building itself a much larger Bahamas destination where ships can remain close to Miami and give a new stop to visit besides tired and worn Nassau.

And I think we will all be happy for that!
