UPDATE: On July 6, 2026, Holland America announced their full 2027/2028 lineup.  While some ships won’t be returning to South Florida, the line will retain a five ship presence with longer itineraries and holiday voyages.  Click here for the latest update and see which ships will be sailing from Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

South Florida Holland America fans may want to pay close attention to what’s shaping up, or more accurately, what’s not shaping up for the 2027/2028 winter cruise season. The line just announced it’s going year-round in Europe, and the ripple effects for Fort Lauderdale and Miami may be significant.

What Holland America Just Announced

Holland America Line is introducing year-round cruising in Europe for 2027/2028, and the Nieuw Statendam is the ship leading the charge. She’ll remain in Europe year-round, sailing a dozen cruises across the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Two additional winter voyages aboard the Zuiderdam have also been added to the European schedule.

But the bigger story for South Florida isn’t just the Nieuw Statendam staying in Europe – it’s what the full deployment picture looks like when you compare this coming winter to the one after it.

What South Florida Gets in 2026/2027

To understand how significant the shift is, start with what Holland America currently offers out of South Florida for the 2026/2027 winter season (October through April):

  • Fort Lauderdale: Nieuw Amsterdam, Eurodam, Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam
  • Miami: Zuiderdam

That’s five ships keeping Holland America’s Caribbean presence strong out of South Florida. Now look ahead one year.

What 2027/2028 Looks Like Right Now

Based on currently published itineraries, Holland America has no ships scheduled for Fort Lauderdale or Miami until December 22, 2027, when the Oosterdam arrives. That’s a long gap compared to the five-ship lineup the line fields this coming winter.

Here’s where each ship stands for the 2027/2028 season:

The Project Evolution Factor

Those schedule gaps may not be purely about deployment strategy. Holland America’s Project Evolution, the line’s $500 million fleet revitalization program, is overhauling half the fleet, and drydock windows have to come from somewhere.

The Oosterdam is the only ship so far to have her Project Evolution refurbishment plans revealed and open for booking. The Zuiderdam, Westerdam, Noordam, Nieuw Amsterdam, and Eurodam are all scheduled to go through the overhaul but exactly when hasn’t been announced. Those blank stretches in the schedule could very well be providing the answer.

So Is Oosterdam the Only Caribbean Ship This Winter?

As of right now, yes.  At least based on what’s published. But let’s hold off on drawing firm conclusions. The Eurodam’s schedule gap from November through March is notable, and it lines up almost perfectly with a typical Caribbean winter season. Whether HAL is planning to slot her back into the Caribbean, or that window gets filled with a few weeks of drydock time, will tell us a lot about the line’s South Florida commitment going forward.

Rotterdam’s lack of itineraries after early October 2027 is similarly interesting – though between her and Eurodam, one or both could easily be headed to the Caribbean.  With Rotterdam just out of drydock a few weeks ago, she’s not due again for several years. Being the newest ship in the fleet, already has the amenities that are being added to older ships as part of Project Evolution.

For South Florida cruisers who have relied on Holland America for Caribbean sailings, the 2027/2028 winter season is shaping up to look very different from what the line currently offers. Right now, the Oosterdam appears to be the only confirmed option out of Fort Lauderdale, arriving in late December – a far cry from the five-ship lineup that will serve the region this coming winter.  My best guess right now, is that we will only have three ships – Oosterdam (confirmed), Eurodam, and Rotterdam – for 2027/2028 and that makes me sad.

Keep in mind, Holland America hasn’t made any formal announcements about completing the 2027/2028 Caribbean deployment, so there’s still time for the picture to change.  But right now, the trend line is clear: Holland America is betting on Europe, and South Florida is feeling it.
