Back in May, I took a close look at Holland America’s 2027-2028 deployment and came away puzzled. At that point, the line had only confirmed one ship, the Oosterdam, for the Caribbean season in South Florida. The rest of the fleet was either staying in Europe, committed to South America, or completely missing from the published schedules. It was like a jigsaw puzzle with most of the pieces missing.

This morning, Holland America finally filled in those missing pieces with a major announcement about their 2027-2028 Caribbean season. And here’s the real news: we’re not losing ships. We’re getting five ships in South Florida, just like we have now. It’s a different roster, but the deployment stays the same.

Here’s What Holland America Just Detailed

Holland America released a breakdown of their 2027-2028 Caribbean season today, and there’s actually a lot to work with. The line is offering 29 itineraries across 47 departures running from October 2027 through March 2028. They’re making a point about having more nine-day-or-longer voyages in the Caribbean than any other cruise line, which makes sense considering the typical HAL cruiser wants longer cruises with more unique destinations instead of the same-old stops other lines offer.

The itineraries include Eastern, Western, and Southern Caribbean, plus the Panama Canal. You’ve got five- and six-day getaways for people who just want a quick break, but the real highlight of the season is a 28-day Pan Am 100th Anniversary Legendary Voyage that traces those historic Clipper flying boat routes across the Caribbean, Mexico, and Latin America. Created in partnership with Pan Am, the voyage visits 19 ports in 13 countries with nearly half being part of Pan Am’s original network.

So What About South Florida?

Here’s the thing that got lost in all the incomplete schedules back in May. Holland America is deploying five ships to the Caribbean in 2027-2028, which is exactly what they’re doing now. The difference is which five ships they’re sending.

Right now in 2026-2027, we’ve got Nieuw Amsterdam, Eurodam, Rotterdam, Zuiderdam, and Oosterdam. In 2027-2028, we’re getting Eurodam, Rotterdam, Zuiderdam, Volendam, and Oosterdam. Nieuw Amsterdam is heading to South America instead, and the much smaller (and oldest in the fleet) Volendam is getting the South Florida Caribbean assignment.

So we’re not losing ships in South Florida. We’re trading one ship for another.

The Oosterdam Arrives Completely Reimagined

Here’s what makes the Oosterdam’s Caribbean deployment worth your attention. She’s coming out of Holland America’s Project Evolution refurbishment, and they’re not just painting and refreshing. They’re fundamentally changing how the ship is designed for how people actually cruise today.

New stateroom categories are the biggest shift. Solo Verandah staterooms with private balconies and dedicated workspace are specifically designed for solo travelers, which the cruise industry doesn’t always handle well. If you’re someone who travels alone but wants a balcony and a proper place to work, that’s actually useful. They’re also adding Bridgeview Suites with panoramic ocean views and expanded living space, and Vista Suites are debuting on the ship for the first time.

During the 2027-2028 season, Oosterdam will handle longer Southern Caribbean itineraries and Panama Canal voyages, so you’re getting the fully reimagined ship on voyages that actually give you time to appreciate what they’ve done with her.

RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay Gets Real Upgrades

Holland America’s private island is showing up on nearly every Caribbean itinerary, and guests will see a whole new experience once they arrive via tender.

A new beach club is on the way, complete with waiter service and priority tendering. You get exclusive food and beverage options in the club, upgraded seating, and expanded views of the ship. They’re also refreshing the Lobster Shack with island-exclusive menu items and new beverage experiences. The cabanas and villas are being expanded, and they’ve added new shopping venues and beach facilities.

Cruise Lengths and Specific Itineraries

So what will the 2027-2028 season look like and what ships will be sailing from the Sunshine State?  Glad you asked!

Five- and six-day getaways are available on Zuiderdam and Eurodam from Fort Lauderdale, hitting Nassau, RelaxAway, Grand Turk, and Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic depending on the cruise.

Seven- and eight-day Eastern Caribbean cruises are running on Eurodam, Rotterdam, and Zuiderdam with various combinations of Nassau, RelaxAway, Grand Turk, Amber Cove, Key West, San Juan, and St. Thomas. These depart regularly from November through March with multiple dates available.

Nine- to 12-day itineraries give you longer stays in port, which is what Holland America’s emphasizing this season. You’ve got nine-, 10-, and 11-day Southern Caribbean cruises featuring the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao), with some adding Grand Cayman and Cartagena. You can also do 10- or 11-day Western Caribbean voyages hitting Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Honduras, Belize, and Mexico.

Twelve-day Panama Canal Discovery cruises are available on Volendam and Oosterdam, featuring a partial transit and Gatun Lake alongside Caribbean ports and Central America stops.

And then there’s the 28-day Pan Am 100th Anniversary Legendary Voyage on Zuiderdam, departing October 30, 2027 roundtrip from Miami. It’s the event of the season if you’re into travel history.

Holiday Cruises

Holland America’s offering eight holiday sailings during the season – Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year options. The Rotterdam’s running a seven-day Eastern Caribbean Holiday from Fort Lauderdale on December 22, 2027. The Oosterdam’s got an 11-day Southern Caribbean Holiday also departing December 22 from Fort Lauderdale, hitting RelaxAway, George Town in Grand Cayman, and Cartagena with late-night stays in Aruba and Curaçao.

Back in May, I thought we were looking at a pretty bare schedule for South Florida in 2027-2028. With only the Oosterdam confirmed, it looked like Holland America was pulling back. But today’s announcement changes that story significantly.

We’re not seeing a reduction in ships. We’re seeing a shift. Five ships in 2026-2027, five ships in 2027-2028. The Nieuw Amsterdam goes elsewhere, and Volendam comes to the Caribbean. The Oosterdam arrives completely reimagined with new staterooms and venues. RelaxAway gets legitimate upgrades. And you’ve got itinerary options ranging from quick five-day getaways to that 28-day Pan Am voyage that’s genuinely worth considering if you’re into travel history.

Whether this works for you as a cruiser depends on what you care about. If you’re someone who likes to cruise different Holland America ships throughout the winter, you’re working with a similar roster. If you want the Oosterdam in particular, or if you’re interested in longer Caribbean explorations with more port time, this schedule delivers.
