Come along with me for a walk around Kingstown, the capital of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Explora I docked at the commercial port, and from there we’ll head out along Bay Street, through the market, past a couple of churches and a cemetery, and back again. It’s very much a town for locals, not tourists.

Key Takeaways

  • Kingstown is a commercial port, definitely not one built for cruise ships, but there’s a small area by the ship with some shops and a restaurant.
  • I looked around on Google Maps before I came out and couldn’t even find a beach to walk to. This is absolutely a port where you must do an excursion.
  • Right outside the port you’ve got tight streets, tour buses, open sewers and pretty much no sidewalks, so you just go.
  • There’s a vegetable market close to the port, and Bay Street is the main drag. The KFC was packed with a huge line.
  • It’s a very bustling downtown and it’s gritty, with lots of people selling something and plenty of partying and beer drinking out in public.
  • The one good thing: not one person came up to me trying to sell me anything.
  • A street food sign listed wings and fries for 10 and a Coca Cola for 6.
  • I stopped at an old church and cemetery, and St. Mary’s Roman Catholic school, which looks like something out of Harry Potter.

Good to Know

Tourists definitely stick out here. It looks a little sketchy, but I didn’t feel unsafe. Just watch your step, watch the traffic, and remember they drive on the left, so you walk on that side too.

We got a couple of quick rain showers while I was walking around, so bring something for the rain. The sun came right back out each time.

If you want the pretty side of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Bequia was a much nicer stop, with beachfront homes, a path along the water and an awesome beach.
