When most people think about Halloween cruises, Disney Cruise Line is probably the first cruise line that comes to mind.
Disney has been doing its Halloween on the High Seas sailings for years, complete with costumed characters, trick-or-treating, deck parties, special entertainment, and ships filled with pumpkins and Halloween decorations.
But what if you like Halloween and don’t necessarily want Mickey and Minnie to be the center of it?
Margaritaville at Sea is bringing back its Sail the Haunted Seas celebration for Fall 2026, and while there are activities for families, much of the lineup appears to be designed for adults who want costumes, cocktails, parties, and a little Halloween fun at sea.
Sail the Haunted Seas Returns
Sail the Haunted Seas will take place aboard Margaritaville at Sea Paradise, sailing from Palm Beach, and Margaritaville at Sea Islander, sailing from Tampa.
Halloween cruises run from September 15 through November 1, which means passengers don’t need to sail over Halloween itself to experience it.
That’s important, especially after looking at whether holiday cruises are really worth the higher prices. Sailing during the actual holiday can be expensive, while themed programming often begins weeks earlier.
In this case, you can book a September or early October sailing and still get the Halloween decorations and activities without having to travel over Halloween weekend.
A lot of cruise lines acknowledge Halloween in some way. There may be a costume party, some decorations around the ship, and perhaps a few Halloween-themed drinks.
Margaritaville appears to be taking things a little further.
The lineup includes parties, a costume competition, trick-or-treating, trivia, specialty drinks, a game show, and a Halloween bar crawl.
White Hot Neon Nightmares
One of the main events is White Hot Neon Nightmares, a Halloween version of Margaritaville at Sea’s regular White Hot Neon Nights party.
The event will feature costumes, glowing face paint, Halloween music, specialty cocktails, and ghosts wandering around the party.
This is also where the difference between Margaritaville and Disney becomes pretty clear.
Disney’s Halloween parties are centered around its characters and families. Margaritaville’s version sounds more like an adult deck party with Halloween costumes and drinks.
There will still be families onboard, but this is probably going to appeal most to passengers who would rather spend Halloween dancing with a margarita than standing in line for a character photo.
A Halloween Bar Crawl
It wouldn’t really be a Margaritaville celebration without drinks, and the cruise line is adding a Halloween bar crawl to the lineup.
Bars around the ships will also serve seasonal drinks described as “bubbling brews and potent potions.”
The cruise line hasn’t released a complete drink menu yet, but I’m sure there will be plenty of colorful cocktails with smoke, glow cubes, and names that sound much more dangerous than the drinks actually are.
A bar crawl is a good fit for these ships. Margaritaville already has a casual atmosphere, plenty of bars, and passengers who generally don’t need much encouragement to move on to the next round.
Somewhere along the way, someone will probably lose their shaker of salt.
Ghostly Games and Trick-or-Treating
A new Ghostly Game Show is also being added for 2026.
Margaritaville hasn’t shared many details about how the game show will work, but it will be interactive and involve passengers.
There will also be Candy & Chaos, with trick-or-treating around different venues on the ship.
That part of the program should appeal to families, although I’m sure more than a few adults will be participating as well. Nobody is really too old for free candy.
The ship will also offer Trick-or-Trivia, dueling scream-alongs, and other Halloween-themed games during the cruise.
The Costume Competition
Passengers will also be able to take part in a Halloween costume competition.
Cruise ship costume contests are always entertaining because you get a mix of people who planned their costumes months in advance and others who threw something together in the cabin an hour before the contest.
Considering the Margaritaville theme, I’m sure there will be pirates, parrots, tropical ghosts, and probably at least one cheeseburger.
The costume contest may end up being one of the better events simply because so much of it depends on the passengers. The more people who participate, the more fun it usually becomes.
Even the Coffee Shop Is Joining In
The Margaritaville Coffee Shop will also offer pumpkin-spiced drinks and seasonal cold brews during the Halloween sailings.
That may not be the most exciting part of the lineup, but it shows that the theme is being carried into more than just the nighttime entertainment.
It will also give passengers something to order the morning after the bar crawl.
Depending on how the night went, some may need coffee. Others may need something a little stronger.
Short Cruises and Longer Sailings
One advantage Margaritaville at Sea has is the variety of cruise lengths.
The Halloween lineup will be offered on Wicked Weekends, which are three-night Bahamas cruises, along with two-night Witchy Weekdays.
There will also be longer Spooky Sailings ranging from four to seven nights.
That gives passengers the option of making it a short weekend trip or turning it into a longer vacation.
For those of us in Florida, one of the shorter cruises would be easy enough to turn into a quick Halloween getaway. There’s no need to use an entire week of vacation time just to put on a costume and have a few boat drinks.
Is It Better Than Disney?
Disney is still going to have the more elaborate production.
Its ships have the characters, the Pumpkin Tree, themed shows, trick-or-treating, and years of experience putting together Halloween cruises for families.
Margaritaville isn’t trying to compete with Disney on that level.
Instead, it’s offering a different type of Halloween cruise.
Disney is the better choice for families with young children, Disney fans, and anyone who wants a polished, character-driven Halloween experience.
Margaritaville is probably the better fit for adults who want costumes, cocktails, late-night parties, and Halloween activities without the entire cruise revolving around Mickey Mouse.
It may also be a lot easier on the wallet.
