Our first full day at sea on Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Magic and it was spent cruising towards Alaska, providing a great opportunity to acclimate to the time zone and weather changes. The day started with a definite chill as we cruised at just over 19 knots, directly into a 25–30 knot headwind. Even though the seas were relatively calm, the wind created a steady rocking from bow to stern. As noon approached, we noticed the rocking had all but stopped as the wind subsided to a calmer 10 knots, creating a smooth, steady afternoon on the open sea.

We’ll use this time to look ahead to the week, discuss some of the differences in traveling to cooler climates, and share updates from the latest dry dock.
Disney Magic Alaska Cruise Itinerary
So where are we going anyway? Leaving Vancouver, we’re heading north, with the mainland to the starboard side and a scattering of islands to port. Our first destination is glacier viewing at the Stikine Icecap, then continuing to our northernmost point – Skagway, Alaska. On the southbound leg, we’ll have stops at Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan before arriving back in British Columbia.

I’ll go in depth on each destination and the excursions we have planned as we go along, but it’s sure to be an exciting week. For now, here’s a look at our current path and conditions:
Disney Magic Dry Dock Updates
Before the Disney Magic could traverse the icy channels, a few updates took place during a two-week dry dock at Esquimalt Graving Dock in Victoria, British Columbia. From May 1st through the 15th, she got a quick spa treatment with some cosmetic and technical upgrades. Let’s take a look at some of those updates.
- Hull inspection: General maintenance to ensure stability for the Alaskan waters
- Routine technical maintenance: A few behind-the-scenes updates
- Cosmetic upgrades: Replaced the carpeting in the Main Atrium and Cabanas
- General hotel refreshes
- Sanded and refinished areas of the pool decking and sports deck flooring
- Edge Tweens club revamp

Let’s face it, there is only so much that can get done in two weeks. While many were hoping for some grand sweeping revamps, this was merely a quick detailing.
Replacing the carpet in the Main Atrium is sure to please many Disney Magic fans. It was one of the most common remarks I saw as speculation grew regarding the dry dock updates. There’s no question that it was desperately in need of a fresh look after years of fading and heavy use.
In addition to the list above, the Walt Disney Theater also received a glow-up with new carpets and all-new seats. One of the best additions that will likely go overlooked is that the armrests now feature cup holders actually big enough to fit water bottles and even popcorn boxes!

Another of the more noticeable updates is to the Concierge Lounge outdoor area. A retheme to Moana decor, complete with all-new furnishings, welcomes guests to sit and enjoy some tropical vibes among the glacial fjords. Alas, no upper level was added like on the Wonder, something that had been lobbied for by not only guests but the concierge hosts as well. Whether due to structural restrictions, time limitations, or simply budget constraints, we may never know.
While there remains hope it could still be added in the future, you have to start wondering at what point the financial implications of large-scale refurbishments outweigh the lifespan remaining on the oldest ship in the fleet. With the next set of ships on order from Meyer Werft, at some point you have to wonder if the two original ships are making their swan sailings.
This revamp is subtle yet stunning. Soft coastal tones reminiscent of the tropics. I’ll miss the rocking chairs that overlooked the Cove Pool, but there are plenty of comfortable-looking options to choose from.
What Clothes to Pack for an Alaska Cruise?
We travel often enough that the suitcase practically packs itself. This time was quite a bit different though, as we had to account for a climate we generally don’t encounter. Gone are the tank tops and shorts, replaced instead with long-sleeve shirts and jeans. I did bring a pair of flip flops, or “slides” as the kids say, but that was as much for comfort on the airplane as for intended use on the ship. I’ll admit I’m not above wearing socks with sandals if it comes to that! The inclusion of stocking caps and gloves that haven’t been worn since moving from Wisconsin a decade ago was also necessary. Add in an assortment of pullovers and hoodies, as layering will be the key, while also taking precipitation chances into account. The girls each went with an assortment of sweatpants and leggings while I packed a few pairs of slacks. I have no doubt we’ll also be taking advantage of the complimentary bathrobes on those cool evenings on the verandah.
It even went so far as buying a few pairs of new rain pants just for this trip.

With all the potential wildlife sightings along the way through the glacial fjords, we decided to bring along a few pairs of binoculars as well. With any luck they’ll be put to good use for whale watching or spotting sea lions frolicking in the surf.
Don’t worry, if you don’t pack enough clothes or need to add a few layers, Disney will happily invite you to visit Mickey’s Mainsail or White Caps to stock up on all things Disney Cruise Line with an Alaskan twist.
Disney Magic & Disney Wonder Alaska Merchandise
Disney is known for a number of things: entertainment icon, elevated service levels, theme parks. But what all started with a Mouse inevitably ends in a gift shop. Take any ordinary piece of apparel and slap a Disney logo on it and watch the price tag jump. Now call it exclusive and LOOK OUT!
Of course there is a dedicated lineup of DCL Alaska merchandise just waiting to be added to your collection. The hype around this is insane. As the gift shops are restricted from opening until you reach international waters, it gives guests time to walk past and do a little window shopping to plan their attack. Almost an hour before the doors open, excited shoppers began lining up down the hallways to make sure they were the first to get their hands on the sacred wares. The demand is so high that DCL has had to implement a two-per-customer limit on select items to help manage the flow. Of course you can tell those that are adding to their own closets from those that are supplying their eBay stores. Don’t be that person!
Here is a look at the 2026 Alaska-specific merchandise available this season on both the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder.
The hottest commodities seem to be the Mickey & Minnie plushies, Alaska fleece blanket, and the zip up Spirit Jersey.

The “130 Day Email”
For the first time we took advantage of the “130 day email” as it is known to Disney Cruise Line Concierge guests. This is the date that guests can send an email to the shoreside team with any special requests for their sailing. While many of the common requests included in these emails are available for all guests, this magic date allows concierge guests to get ahead of the line when the booking windows open at 123 days prior to embarkation for Pearl Castaway members (120 for Platinum, 105 for Gold, 90 for Silver).
Popular requests include:
- Dining team
- Dining rotation
- Table location
- Stateroom decor
- Booking a cabana on Castaway Cay or Lighthouse Pointe
- Stateroom amenities (extra blankets, bath products, bathrobes, children’s linens)
- Beverage stock
- Specialty dining reservations
- Excursion reservations
The advantage to including these in the email is that the concierge team will make all the appropriate notes and book the reservations on your behalf, saving you from sitting on the phone or in the app trying to secure them along with everyone else. It’s an almost guaranteed way to get the desired times and dates as they get locked in prior to the open booking windows. For those that need to have a cabana on Castaway or Lighthouse, this is the way to go.
Regarding dining options, there are a few things you can request: service team (head server and/or server), dining rotation, table location, and private table. You can request as many of these as you’d like, but keep in mind that they can’t all always be combined. For example, we requested our head server Kendall combined with our server Cristiano. That’s a relatively easy request, as if they are not already working the same section they can be reassigned for each sailing. Those requests would then override requests such as starting the week dining in Lumiere’s, as you’d be relegated to whichever dining rotation the servers were already on. If you requested a specific section of the dining room, such as near the stage for dinner theaters or near a porthole for a view, that would also be subject to the section the requested servers were already assigned. Just like any restaurant, servers have a designated section of tables near each other. Neither they nor you would want them running all the way around the dining room with tables scattered throughout. So when making your requests, I recommend first deciding which are your top priorities and listing them in order of importance.
Getting a private table is somewhat dependent on your party size. It seems rare on DCL for parties of four or more to be seated together without being paired with others. Smaller parties are often paired up to fill tables, and as a party of three we have been seated with other families a few times for that awkward small talk. Another benefit of sailing concierge is the guarantee of a private table.
Requesting specific beverages to be stocked in your stateroom is becoming a thing of the past. In years past you could ask for certain brands of beer or liquor along with preferred soft drinks to be placed in your room prior to arrival, even if they were not standard stock onboard. As the requests grew more and more extravagant, DCL finally decided it was time to put an end to that. The base stock now seems to be a few bottles of water, Coke, Diet Coke, and Sprite in the stateroom refrigerator. If you want more or less of something, you can ask once onboard.
Lastly, requesting excursions and specialty dining to be booked on your behalf helps ensure you have first choice before they fill up.
So what happens if you book within 130 days? Should you still send an email? Absolutely. Even if some things show as sold out on the website, the concierge team will do what they can to accommodate you. That’s simply what they do: go above and beyond to ensure you have the best cruise experience possible.
Palo Brunch on Disney Magic
Sea days are often some of my favorite times to kick back and relax on the sun deck. With a high temp of 50 degrees and strong winds, today was not that kind of day. Instead it provided the perfect opportunity to enjoy Palo Brunch. I’m not sure what more I can say about this experience that I haven’t covered in the past. It’s always the same standard of great food, exceptional views, and an elegant dining room.
For the most part I went with the hits, as this menu has remained largely the same over the past five years. I don’t think we’ve found anything we don’t like, but we have definitely narrowed it down to our favorites and barely need to look at the menu before ordering.
We started off with the non-alcoholic Bellini while our server Karla, from Mexico, brought out the famous bread basket for us to nibble on as we settled in and finalized our plan of attack. And make no mistake about it, this meal requires a plan! We opted to skip the usual egg frittata and omelette, as we can get those anywhere, and each ordered a poached egg instead. Mine came with smoked salmon and hers with rosemary ham.
The waffle required a bit of discussion, as they are always tremendous but also quite filling. At the end of the day it’s still a waffle, so we chose to save room for other fare. Instead we went with our usual flatbread, half margherita and half Italian sausage. With that I’d also like to introduce Njabulo, our flatbread artisan. The aroma he created throughout the restaurant had you salivating in anticipation of his creations, and it did not disappoint.
I can never pass on a nice antipasto of cheese and cured meats, so we ordered that to graze on between courses.

We were also presented with a warm-from-the-oven almond croissant to add a little sweetness to our palate, alongside the savory morsels already in front of us.

For our entrees it was again an easy choice. Chicken Parmesan for Angie while I went with the Veal Saltimbocca, thinly sliced and wrapped around prosciutto and a basil leaf with a Barolo wine jus on the side.
Chef Mario was making the rounds through the dining room and stopped by to make sure we didn’t go hungry.
Finishing things off with our new favorite dessert, we both enjoyed the Italian Zabaglione. This has quickly become our favorite Palo Brunch dessert since our first Magic sailing, when it was recommended to us by our server Soria. Gooey marshmallow fluff over fresh berries with biscotti, then lightly flambéed.

My stomach hurts! But in a good way.
After such an indulgent brunch it was time to take a little stroll around the ship and then hang out back in the room for a little digestive downtime. We convinced the kid to spend a few minutes away from her new friends and join us for Disney Movie Quote Trivia in the Soul Cat Lounge. We were quickly humbled and reminded that we need to start binging Disney+ and take a nostalgic look back at the films we haven’t seen in a while. For the record we only scored 8 out of 20, with the winning score of 18 taking home the medals.
Twice Charmed on Disney Magic

The first foray into the Walt Disney Theater this sailing sets the stage for Twice Charmed, an original twist on the Cinderella story.
Our daughter, Becca, is a fan of the Twisted Tales book series, so we knew this show would be right up her alley. I’ll admit that the first time we watched this it didn’t quite grab me, so I went back and read my reviews from previous sailings. With each viewing it has grown on me, and in particular the role of Cinderella was wonderfully performed this evening.
If you aren’t familiar with the premise, this is a “what if” style reimagining in which Lady Tremaine enlists the help of the Wicked Fairy Godfather, Franco, to go back in time and make the glass slipper fit wicked stepsister Anastasia instead of Cinderella, completely changing the sisters’ fates. Some mayhem ensues as Prince Charming feels something isn’t quite right and goes off in search of his true love. In the end true love prevails, the spell is broken, and our hero and heroine are reunited. Whimsical and at times over the top, it all comes full circle.
Becca said she really enjoyed it, and this was an excellent start to the week’s entertainment.
Dinner at Lumiere’s on Disney Magic
The late dining time has definitely grown on me quickly, as it allowed extra time between the gluttony of Palo Brunch and our dinner. For this evening we returned to Lumiere’s, where we had enjoyed our welcome lunch the day before. Traditionally this has been one of my favorite menus, with so many options in every category it’s hard to choose. Often eschewing the debate and doubling (ok, tripling) up, it’s always one I look forward to.
Like Rapunzel’s the night before, this menu has gotten a revamp. And it’s not all good. To my dismay my favorite appetizer on the cruise line has disappeared: the fried brie. I pointed out this omission to both Kendall and Cristiano, and based on their responses I’m not the first to do so. I tried a courteous and respectful request, casually slipping it in while placing my order, followed by an impassioned plea, a full-on HOA Karen scathing, a four-year-old grocery store meltdown, and a deathbed sobbing. Alas, all the answers were the same: no fried brie for me. I demand to speak to a supervisor! Emails will be sent! Get me the Captain! Vacation ruined!
Ok, so maybe not quite that extreme. To his credit, Kendall promised he’d see if he could work some magic by the end of the cruise. I don’t care how deep into the freezer they have to dig, but if they find me the last one in existence I’ll savor every morsel.
Anyway, we still had a fantastic meal with a few new options that couldn’t be ignored.
Ladies and gentlemen, I proudly present to you your dinner.
I started off with the Marinated Shrimp and the Duck Confit. Both are new twists on previous offerings, replacing the Iced Lobster and Jumbo Shrimp and the previous Duck Confit. The shrimp was essentially the same dish minus a small slice of lobster, while the duck confit was served warm, wrapped in a light flaky pastry with a raspberry jam swirl. In comparison, the shrimp was a draw. I think I prefer the previous version of the duck confit slightly, but this was still very tasty and well seasoned. If anything it was a touch dry and could have used a bit more sauce, but that’s really splitting hairs.
The soups remained the same, luckily for our servers. Had they removed either the French Onion or Potato Leek I think they would have had a mutiny on their hands.
The entrees offered a mixture of new and old dishes, some cleverly renamed rather than completely changed.
We each selected the Carved Roasted Beef Tenderloin, formerly listed as Chateaubriand-Roasted Filet Steak, while Angie and I decided to share the new Tortiglioni Pasta dish. It was the perfect call as they paired nicely together. The Tortiglioni Pasta was cooked perfectly, not too firm or too soggy, and the prosecco cream sauce was divine. With tidbits of bacon and a dusting (who are we kidding, make it rain) of parmesan, it was lighter than expected. To be honest I would not suggest ordering this as a standalone entree, as the portion size was on the smaller side and didn’t offer much protein. Perhaps adding a grilled chicken breast to the dish would help.
I don’t even need to tell you how the Tenderloin was. The picture should speak for itself.
This is where those extra few hours between meals came in clutch, as there was still dessert to be had. This is always the most arduous of decisions. I opted for old faithful, the Grand Marnier Soufflé. I had a hard time passing on one of my favorites, the Tahitian Vanilla Crème Brûlée, but I may have to revisit that another night. Becca was unsure which way to go, but once I reminded her she always steals some of my Opera Gâteau when I order it, she decided on that and also ordered the new Coconut Tapioca Pudding to try.
The soufflé was decadent as always, if not a touch rich following such a full day of eating. The pudding was set aside to take back to the room and refrigerate for a mid-day snack the following day.
Formal Night on an Alaskan Disney Cruise
People always ask about formal nights and what type of attire to pack. Tonight was technically formal night, complete with officers gathering for cocktails and conversation in the Main Atrium. We had heard that Alaskan sailings were much more laid back in this regard. Since everyone is focused on packing winter gear and extra layers to account for the cool temperatures, formal wear is less of a priority. That is absolutely what we witnessed. While there were a select few in nicer apparel, the majority we saw were in hoodies and jeans. It was anything but formal, and that’s perfectly fine. It’s your vacation, you do you, especially when it comes to staying warm and comfortable. The entire ship runs chilly along the corridors, in the dining rooms, and really anywhere outside your stateroom. With doors constantly opening and closing to the outside decks, there is a steady blast of cold air rushing in and dropping the temperature throughout the ship.
Evening Entertainment: Majority Rules & Match Your Mate
The late dining time has one other indirect advantage: it’s a shorter wait for the nightly adult activities and shows to begin. I often end up solo in evening activities as the allure of bed usually triumphs over “just laying down to relax a few minutes before going out.” I was successful in convincing Angie to join me for Majority Rules followed by Match Your Mate down in Fathoms.
These two adult-themed game shows are always good for a few laughs, usually at the expense of fellow guests. If you’re unfamiliar, Majority Rules starts with the audience forming into teams. You don’t need to know your teammates to have fun, and it often consists of couples seated near each other asking “do you want to be a team?” Each team then designates a captain who is in charge of writing down the team’s answers and turning them in to the stage.
From there the host, in this case Hannah from New Zealand, asks a question to the audience. The goal is to write down what you think the majority of the teams will answer, not a unique response. Once the most popular reply is tallied, any teams that submitted it receive a point. While it may seem mundane on the surface, some answers get a little risque.
Here are a few of the questions asked during this episode. I’ll let you imagine the range of responses.
- What would be the most popular activity at a nudist camp?
- What’s your best bar/nightclub pick-up line?
- Worst movie ever made?
The responses ranged everywhere from Rated G to XXX. Hannah had to stop herself a few times and inform the crowd that she’d just leave that one on the table if anyone wanted to come up and read it. This is Disney, not Carnival after all!
Upon wrapping up and declaring a winning team, she transitioned right into Match Your Mate. Three couples are selected from the audience to see who knows their partner the best. Couple #1 is the couple that has been together the shortest amount of time, in this case 8 months. Couple #3 is the couple that has been together the longest, 34 years strong. And Couple #2 is somewhere in the middle and just wants to play, though they do have a slight dance-off for the right to claim that middle spot.
Once we got to know all the contestants, the guys were taken out of the room and over to O’Gills Pub for a beverage while each of the ladies was asked three questions. Starting off simple: when was your first kiss, and was it any good? Fairly tame, just enough to loosen up the room.
Next came: if you were to give your partner a celebrity hall pass, who would they choose? A little more thought went into this one. Couple #3 answered without hesitation, Couple #2 had to throw a dart after declaring that would never happen, while Couple #1 may have had the most obscure answer possible (Jake Paul’s Olympic speed skating girlfriend??).
Things got a bit more interesting with question three, a multiple choice: which Disney song best describes the first time you were intimate? A. A Whole New World (Aladdin), B. Almost There (Princess and the Frog), C. For the First Time in Forever (Frozen).
The guys were then brought back in and asked the same questions, earning a point for each matching answer. Plenty of laughter and some side-eye looks followed as they tried to get inside each other’s heads, which anyone in a relationship knows is a dangerous journey.
Round two swapped things around, with the ladies heading out for a drink while the guys took the hot seat. When it was all said and done, Couple #3 prevailed, as you would expect from anyone who has stood the test of time for over three decades. Couple #1 may or may not make it to month nine.
With that it’s time to call it a night. We gain an extra hour this evening as we roll into the Alaskan time zone. Tomorrow promises to be a chilly yet exciting day. We are scheduled to arrive at the glacier between noon and 1 PM and hopefully will have an abundance of wildlife sightings as we make our way through the fjords to Dawes Glacier.

I hope you’re enjoying the journey so far but the best is yet to come. See you real soon!
