Celebrity Cruises President and CEO, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, made a historic announcement today by naming Greek brothers, Dimitrios and Tasos Kafetzis, as the co-captains of Celebrity Ascent – the fourth ship in Celebrity Cruises’ Edge Series. The ship is set to debut in winter 2023, and the maritime brothers will bring a new level of leadership to the cruise line.
The Celebrity Ascent is not just any ordinary ship, but a luxurious resort at sea, brought to life by a team of renowned lifestyle icons including multi-award-winning designer Kelly Hoppen CBE, celebrated American designer Nate Berkus, and Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud. Lutoff-Perlo stated, “I am so proud to leave [Celebrity Ascent] in the hands of these expert mariners.”
Captain Dimitrios has dedicated over three decades of his maritime career to Celebrity Cruises, starting as an Apprentice Officer on Celebrity’s first vessel, the Horizon, in 1990. He is now named the take-out captain of Celebrity Ascent, the latest ship in the trailblazing Edge Series. Born in Greece and graduating at the top of his class from the Merchant Maritime Academy of Syros-Athens, Dimitrios has served on every class of ship in Celebrity’s fleet and was part of the start-up team for several ships, including Celebrity Apex, where he was also the take-out captain.
Captain Tasos, who was inspired by his older brother’s career, joined Celebrity Cruises in 1998 after graduating from the Merchant Marine College. He has served as captain of Celebrity Edge and has been involved in the opening of several other ships in the company’s fleet. The brothers will alternate their time on Celebrity Ascent, with a three-month on-and-off rotation.
The brothers expressed their excitement and honor in being named as co-captains of Celebrity Ascent. Captain Dimitrios stated, “Nearly 35 years after Celebrity Cruises was founded in Greece, they will have not one, but two Greek captains taking the helm of their newest vessel in 2023 and I am honored for my brother and me to take this role, together.”
