Cruise ships are often referred to as floating cities, and for good reason. These vessels need to provide all the functions of a shoreside town while traveling the world, and it takes countless team members working together to make this happen. For the first time ever, Holland America Line is bringing this story to life with their new and exciting show called “A City on the Sea.”
“A City on the Sea” will take guests on a journey through the engine room, the laundry, and other areas on board to showcase the miracle of modern engineering and how thousands of linens are processed daily. Guests will also be able to explore bakeries, restaurants, theaters, grocery stores, and hardware shops, all while never leaving the ship.
This behind-the-scenes event will be held in the ship’s World Stage and will feature immersive video footage and interviews with the ship’s cruise and travel director, captain, and crew. The show will be a celebration of the human spirit and all that can be accomplished on a cruise ship, while also highlighting the challenges and opportunities that come with working on such a vessel.
Engineers, medical staff, musicians, and stateroom attendants will share their experiences working on a cruise ship, and one captain will discuss how he views himself as the mayor of the “city.” Guests will also have the opportunity to meet team members who have formed friendships that span decades and hear from a tailor whose family has had a relationship with Holland America Line for generations.
“A City on the Sea” will be a daytime presentation that debuts on the historic October 15th transatlantic voyage aboard the Rotterdam, and it will be offered on every cruise fleetwide starting in early 2023.
