Let’s take a walk around the La Romana cruise port in the Dominican Republic. I stopped here on Explora Journeys Explora I, and since only a handful of guests went ashore, the port was nice and empty. We’ll start at the pool, check out the bars and the lighthouse, and finish in the shopping area by the entrance.

Key Takeaways

  • There’s a nice size pool with plenty of loungers and a great view.
  • There’s no beach at the port. The closest beach is about a 20 to 30 minute taxi ride away.
  • You’ll find a couple of different bars around the port with drinks and light bites.
  • There’s a lighthouse that reminded me of the one at MSC’s Ocean Cay.
  • The shopping area is right as you come in, with a duty free shop, local merchants and some huge pink flamingos I wish I could have taken home.
  • It was empty because Explora I is a small ship, with only about 600 of us on board, so it’ll be a lot busier when a larger ship is in port.

Good to Know

There really isn’t a whole lot to do at the port itself. You’re basically coming here for the pool, unless you’ve booked a shore excursion or want to take a taxi to a beach.

If you want a beach day, plan for the taxi ride or an excursion ahead of time, since there’s no beach within walking distance of the ship.
