Good morning from Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, where MSC World America is making the first port call of this seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruise.
If you’re just joining the live blog, there’s already plenty to catch up on. Day 1 covered my Brightline trip to Miami, MSC’s impressively easy embarkation process at its new PortMiami terminal, a tour of my Fantastica Deluxe Balcony stateroom on Deck 11, dinner at Butcher’s Cut Steakhouse and some initial impressions of the ship.
Yesterday’s Day 2 live blog was our first sea day and covered some of the challenges that come with having thousands of passengers onboard at the same time, including the lunchtime chaos in the buffet. I also talked about the role cruise directors play in some people’s vacation plans, Gala Night activities, MSC’s beverage tasting events, the surprisingly excellent Dirty Dancing: The Celebration production show, dinner at Eataly and a late-night visit to World America’s not-so-secret Speakeasy.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this trip, this isn’t going to be another full, traditional MSC World America review. I’ve sailed this ship several times since being onboard for her inaugural sailing from PortMiami in April 2025, so instead I’m using these daily live blogs to focus on observations, experiences and whatever happens to catch my attention as the cruise unfolds. Sometimes that will be dining or entertainment, sometimes it will be crowds and service, and sometimes it will just be one of those little things you notice after spending enough time on a ship.
If you want the deeper dive, you can also check out my previous MSC World America reports and other MSC cruise reviews here.
Today, though, we’re in Puerto Plata.
Unlike Amber Cove, Carnival Corporation’s purpose-built cruise destination outside the city, today we’re docking at the Taino Bay Cruise Terminal in Puerto Plata itself. I’ve visited both several times, and given the choice, I’d much rather be here. Amber Cove is perfectly fine if your idea of a port day is a pool, swim-up bar and a controlled cruise-port environment, but Puerto Plata gives you the opportunity to actually get out into the city, walk around, see some of the architecture and get a better feel for everyday life in the Dominican Republic.
That’s what’s on tap for today, along with whatever else happens onboard before and after the port visit.
So without further delay, Day 3 of the MSC World America live blog begins now.
Some notes: the page will refresh with the latest posts and you can also sort post by newest to oldest or oldest to newest.

Puerto Plata Walking Guide
I put together a walking guide of what to do in Puerto Plata which you can find here, and is something I’m going to be doing in just a little bit!
Puerto Plata Cruise Port Walking Guide: What To See Downtown
Taino Bay Cruise Port
MSC World America docks at Taino Bay, and this is one of those cruise ports where you could spend the entire day without ever leaving the terminal complex if you wanted to, but there is a lot to explore outside the gates and most can be done on foot.
Taino Bay is a clean and modern cruise port right in Puerto Plata, and unlike Amber Cove, you can walk straight out of the port and into the actual city. But if you have no interest in sightseeing, there’s plenty to keep you occupied inside the port itself. There are shops, bars, restaurants, a large pool area, plenty of loungers, shaded seating, and one of the best free features you’ll find at a Caribbean cruise port – a lazy river.
Yes, free.
There’s no admission charge to use the pool or lazy river, so if your ideal port day consists of getting off the ship, grabbing a lounger and floating around for a while, you can do that without buying a day pass or booking an excursion. That alone makes Taino Bay a pretty good option for families or anyone who wants an easy, low-effort day ashore.
The port can handle up to three ships and around 14,000 passengers in the terminal area. The good news is that the complex is large enough to spread people out a bit, and there are multiple pool and seating areas rather than one tiny spot where everyone is fighting for a chair.
The other thing I like about Taino Bay is that it gives you a choice. You can treat it like a mini resort and never leave the port, or you can walk out the gate and be in Puerto Plata’s historic district within about 10 to 15 minutes. That flexibility is what makes it a much better stop, in my opinion, than the more isolated Amber Cove up the street.
And if you don’t feel like walking the pier from the ship to the terminal, there are tuk tuks running back and forth for tips, which is another nice little convenience.
Check out my walk around video of the port below:

- Yacht Club Restaurant – 7:00am – 9:00am

Welcome to Puerto Plata, DR
MSC World America arrived in Puerto Plata at around 8:15 this morning, and guests were cleared to go ashore at 9:00 a.m. We’re spending the day in port alongside Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Luna, so with both ships combined, there are well over 10,000 passengers and crew in and around the city today.
Something caught my attention this morning when the cruise director made the announcement that the gangways were open. Along with the usual reminders to carry photo identification and your ship card, and not to bring food ashore, he specifically mentioned two things: avoid eating lettuce and try to avoid drinks with ice.
With the great lettuce scare of 2026 going on right now, I can understand the lettuce warning. The ice warning, though, was interesting because I honestly can’t remember ever hearing that called out in a cruise ship announcement before.
And I give MSC credit for it.
I’m extremely cautious about what I drink ashore in a lot of Caribbean ports. My rule is pretty simple: if it’s not in a sealed can or bottle from a brand I recognize, such as Coke or Pepsi, I usually skip it. I don’t drink beverages made with local water, and I definitely try to avoid ice.
A few months ago in Curaçao, we had a late departure and I went ashore for dinner. In a momentary lapse of judgment, I ordered a gin and tonic and completely forgot about the ice and the water that may have been used to make the tonic.
Let’s just say the next 24 hours were interesting, and I’m still annoyed with myself for that one because I’m normally so careful.
So when MSC specifically reminded passengers this morning to avoid lettuce and ice, I thought it was worth mentioning. It’s a small thing, but it’s the kind of practical warning that can save someone from spending part of their cruise getting a very close look at their stateroom bathroom.
Good for MSC for putting it out there.

Auto-refreshing every 10 seconds.
