Holland America Line’s latest ship, Rotterdam, arrived in New York City, marking the end of a 15-day cruise that was recreating the maiden voyage of the company’s first ship, Rotterdam I. The ship departed from Rotterdam, the Netherlands on October 15th, 1872 and 150 years later, the newest addition to the fleet arrived in New York to celebrate the historic occasion.
Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine declared today an “honorary day” for Holland America Line to recognize the company’s contributions to Manhattan throughout its 150-year journey. A celebration was held on board the ship, featuring a musical piece by Emmy Award-winning producer and composer Steven Schoenberg and a performance by a 25-piece ensemble of former Lincoln Center Stage musicians.
In partnership with The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Holland America Line will introduce video content across its fleet and a curated exhibit launching at Ellis Island in 2023, detailing the company’s role in bringing one in ten immigrants from Europe to the United States. This partnership is a way to celebrate the company’s journey from an immigrant carrier to a consumer ocean liner fleet.
“We are excited to celebrate our 150th Anniversary in such a vibrant city with our newest ship on a rare overnight call,” said Gus Antorcha, President of Holland America Line. “Sailing into New York and seeing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island is an emotional experience that takes us back to more than a century ago.”
During the voyage, guests were treated to exclusive menus that showcased the company’s 150-year history, with entrées each evening reminiscent of dishes served as early as the 1920s. Special programming included a “Throwback Happy Hour,” Dutch High Tea, presentations on the company’s history, and anniversary-themed trivia. The company also introduced a limited-edition Pilsner beer, HAL Pils, in a commemorative can with the iconic Jan van Beers advertising poster of 1898.
For those who wish to continue the celebration, many of the same special culinary and enrichment programs will be offered on another 150th Anniversary Transatlantic, departing from New York on April 6, 2023, and ending in Rotterdam on April 18, the company’s 150th birthday.
Holland America Line’s Rotterdam arrival in New York City is a historic moment that celebrates the company’s 150-year journey. The ship’s arrival and the events that took place on board marked the beginning of a year-long celebration of the company’s legacy and its impact on the world of cruise travel.
