If you’re heading out on a Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) vacation, you’re likely looking forward to the Freestyle style of cruising they pioneered – no rigid schedules, no forced formal nights, and definitely no tuxedos required.

But as of February 2026, NCL has adjusted its dress code. While relaxed is still the name of the game, there are a few new Smart Casual rules for specialty dining that might catch you off guard if you only pack flip-flops.

Here is everything you need to know about NCL’s dress code along with suggestions about what to pack!  And speaking of what to pack, be sure to print out our ultimate cruise packing guide so you don’t forget a thing!

Daytime: Cruise Casual

During the day, NCL is laid-back as it should be. Whether you’re grabbing a burger at the buffet or lounging around on the pool deck, the rule is Cruise Casual.

  • For the Ladies: Sundresses, skirts, capris, shorts, and jeans are all perfect.
  • For the Guys: Khakis, shorts, jeans, and casual shirts.
  • The Swimsuit Rule: You can absolutely wear your swimsuit to the buffet or outdoor cafes, but NCL asks that you throw on a shirt or cover-up and footwear before heading inside.

Dinner: Smart Casual vs. Casual

This is where it gets a little tricky. NCL splits its dining rooms into two categories. Most places allow shorts, but the high-end specialty spots now require you to level up your look as of February 2026.

The “No-Shorts” List

If you have a dinner reservation at these specific venues, leave the shorts in the cabin:

  • Cagney’s Steakhouse & Le Bistro
  • Onda by Scarpetta & Ocean Blue
  • Palomar & The Haven Restaurant

What is “Smart Casual”?

In these upscale spots, the goal is make the specialty restaurant atmosphere feel like a “date night” for all.

  • Men: You’ll need long pants (nice jeans are fine!), a collared shirt (polo or button-down), and closed-toed shoes.
  • Women: Think slacks, dresses, skirts, or nice jeans with a blouse.
  • The Kids’ Loophole: Good news for parents – children 12 and under can wear “nice shorts” in every single restaurant on the ship, including the fancy ones.

What to Leave at Home

Even with the freedom to dress as you please with NCL’s Freestyle mantra, there are a few fashion oopsies that might get you turned away at the dining room door:

  • No Tank Tops for Men: Sleeveless shirts are a no-go in any dining room or specialty restaurant.
  • Check Your Denim: Avoid jeans that are excessively ripped or faded.
  • Lose the Hat: Baseball caps and visors aren’t allowed in the dining rooms.
  • This isn’t a rule, but a tip: Pack a sweater. Some people find the air conditioning in some venues to be a bit chilly.

Packing for the Big Events

NCL is famous for its parties. If you want to feel like part of the crowd, make sure these items are in your suitcase:

  • The White Hot Party: This is NCL’s signature event. Pack an all-white outfit to glow under the blacklights on the pool deck.
  • Norwegian’s Night Out: This is the 2026 version of “Dress-Up Night.” It’s totally optional, but it’s the best time to get professional photos taken.
  • Shore Excursions: Don’t forget closed-toed shoes. Many active tours (like zip-lining or ATVs) won’t let you participate in sandals or flip flops.
