For a while now, anyone paying attention to MSC Cruises Ocean Cay Marine Reserve has probably noticed that something new has been taking shape nearby. There’s been dirt moving, construction activity, and just enough visible progress to get cruise fans talking, but not nearly enough actual information from MSC to explain what exactly was going on. The project was floating around under the cryptic name “Little Cay,” which of course only made people speculate even more. Well, now we finally have an official name: Sandy Cay.

Today, MSC Group’s cruise division announced that Sandy Cay will be a new private island destination next to Ocean Cay in The Bahamas, with a planned debut in 2028. The company says it is being developed for both MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests, and describes it as a more secluded, luxury-focused complement to Ocean Cay, complete with aragonite sand.

The first rendering released of the new island shows multiple pools, beach areas, a marina, guest structures, and solar panels.

And that’s where things get interesting.

Because while MSC has finally given us the name and a rendering, the details are still pretty sparse. That means the speculation is absolutely not shutting down anytime soon. For months, people have been watching this man-made island come together and asking the obvious questions: is this going to be an Explora Journeys-only escape? Will it become some sort of Yacht Club retreat? Or is MSC about to create an upgraded beach club style experience where regular guests can buy their way in with some kind of premium day pass?

Based on how MSC is positioning Sandy Cay so far, it feels very possible this could end up being some combination of those things. The official language leans into “luxury,” “secluded,” and “complementary” to Ocean Cay rather than simply calling it another open-access beach area for everybody. MSC has also said Sandy Cay is for both MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests, which rules out the idea that it is strictly an Explora-only place, but it still leaves a whole lot of room for tiers, access rules, and upcharges.

That is why my first thought is that this may wind up being MSC’s version of an elevated, access-controlled island experience. Think Yacht Club guests getting included access, while other passengers may have the option to buy in for the day if they want something quieter, nicer, and more exclusive than the standard beach setup. That would not be a shocking move at all, especially at a time when cruise lines are putting more effort into monetizing their private destinations with premium areas, upgraded beach clubs, and adults-only or higher-end spaces.

In other words, MSC may be looking at what other lines are doing with private destinations and deciding it wants a more upscale product layered into Ocean Cay without completely changing what Ocean Cay already is.

And honestly, that makes sense.

Ocean Cay has always been different than some of the more overbuilt, amusement park style private destinations out there. It focuses more on beaches, a lower-key atmosphere, and the marine reserve angle rather than turning into a giant floating Disney World on land. Sandy Cay looks like it could be MSC’s way of adding a more premium experience without losing that original identity. At the same time, MSC is also adding additional enhancements, including new dining venues, new beach concepts for families and adults, more places to relax, and conservation-focused experiences throughout 2027 leading up to the opening of Sandy Cay.

If MSC plays this right, Sandy Cay could become a very interesting addition to Ocean Cay. If they play it wrong, it could just wind up being another way to separate guests into who gets the nice beach and who gets the regular one.

Either way, we’re finally past “Little Cay.”

And that alone is progress.

  1. How you heard anything about MSC offering scuba diving at either? Daughter ( certified diver ) read something about it, but now hasn’t been able to find information and when we are on ships the information is very vague.

    1. Hi Gail – yes they do offer a shore excursion for this. Its called “OCEAN CAY SNORKELING ADVENTURE” and is shore excursion code OCC04. It’s an available excursion for my cruise on Saturday for $108 per person. The description is:

“Get a glimpse of life underwater during this snorkelling excursion at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, lasting approximately two hours. You’ll be able to follow your instructor for a guided tour or explore by yourself, and there’s a complimentary rum punch or fruit punch to enjoy afterwards.
      Excursion details

Dive into a snorkelling adventure through the waters of Ocean Cay, MSC Cruises’private Bahamian island, on this excursion of around two hours. After approximately 15 minutes for passengers to board the boat, you’ll sail for around 15 minutes to the snorkelling site. Then you’ll be given a safety briefing and instructions on how to use your equipment, before embarking on a snorkelling session lasting approximately one hour.

Follow your instructor through the waters if you want a more guided experience – you’ll learn about marine life and plant life from your guide, and you may even get to see fish being fed. Alternatively, feel free to snorkel around the area on your own for a more independent exploration.

Afterwards, reboard the boat and sip a complimentary fruit punch or rum punch, the perfect reward after an active trip. You’ll then sail back to the pier on a journey lasting around 15 minutes, concluding the excursion.”
