A cruise is a great way to spend a vacation relaxing, exploring new destinations, soaking up some sun and enjoying the serenity an ocean cruise offers. But there is also one other key ingredient to cruising… the food!
It’s no secret that eating is a large part of the cruise vacation experience. With most ships offering some form of around-the-clock dining, there is never a shortage of food onboard a cruise ship.
Dining trends have changed over the years, however. Gone are the days of the Midnight Buffet. The main dining room has been shrunk and speciality restaurants with everything from steak and sushi to seafood and gourmet pizza have been introduced – with and without an added surcharge. Set dining times, once a mainstay of cruising, has made way for flexible dining times on nearly all cruise ships.
Celebrity chefs have been tapped by many of the cruise lines to give their spin to dining at sea. From Guy’s Burger Joint on select Carnival ships that serve up one damn good hamburger to Jamie Oliver’s Italian restaurant on select Royal Caribbean cruise ships, these famed chefs create menus unique to their venue onboard.
Here’s a look at some of the food served in the Black Pearl dining room on the Carnival Splendor.

After you had your fill of choices ranging from lobster and prime rib, to comfort classics like meatloaf or a seafood pasta, the meal isn’t complete without having some form of decadent dessert. After all, you’re on vacation, so dessert is allowed!
On Carnival Cruise Line, the signature dessert is the Warm Chocolate Melting Cake, which is a must-have. In fact, a quick Google search for it shows just how popular the dessert is with many past passengers posting recipes on how to make the dessert at home to satisfy cake withdrawal!
