When it comes to creating true magic on the high seas, no one does it better than Disney Cruise Line. After all, a little pixie dust goes a long way in making a vacation truly magical! One small touch of that Disney magic that many may overlook is the tradition of having Disney characters adorn the stern (back) of their ships. For the newest vessel, the Disney Adventure, Disney has chosen its most iconic duo—Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse—to grace the stern making a first for the line and for the two famous mice.

The Tradition Began with the Disney Magic
The tradition of featuring Disney characters on the sterns of cruise ships began with the launch of the Disney Magic in 1998. As the first ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, it features Goofy as he dangles from the stern, paintbrush in hand, as if he’s putting the finishing touches on the ship itself. This small touch marked the beginning of a trend that would continue through the entire fleet.
Since the Disney Magic debuted, each new Disney cruise ship has followed suit, showcasing a different character—or in some cases, a pair—on its stern. Here’s a rundown of the ships and the characters that adorn them:
- Disney Magic (1998) – Goofy swings from the stern with a paintbrush in hand.
- Disney Wonder (1999) – Donald Duck’s nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, join forces with a sea turtle playing with a life preserver.
- Disney Dream (2011) – Sorcerer Mickey, in his iconic red robe and hat from Fantasia, casts a spell over the ship.
- Disney Fantasy (2012) – Dumbo, the flying elephant, and his friend Timothy Q. Mouse add a touch of fairy-tale magic to a ship based on fantasy itself.
- Disney Wish (2022) – Rapunzel, with her long golden hair, hangs from the stern, painting the ship’s name on the aft.
- Disney Treasure (2024) – Peter Pan and Captain Hook share the spotlight obviously on the hunt for some of that “treasure” found onboard.
- Disney Destiny (2025) – Spider-Man swings into action, with his Spider-Bots making the first time a Marvel character appears on a Disney ship which is fitting since there’s a lot of Marvel action onboard.
- Disney Adventure (2025) – Captain Mickey Mouse and Captain Minnie Mouse make their debut, together, for the first time.
