Disney Cruise Line’s latest vessel, the Disney Treasure, has officially floated out of the Meyer Werft Shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. This significant milestone marks the completion of the ship’s exterior construction and sets the stage for the final phase of its development before it embarks on its inaugural journey in December 2024.
The Importance of the Float Out
The float out is a ceremonial and practical event in shipbuilding that signifies a ship’s readiness for the next stages of construction. For Disney Treasure, which began its build in January 2023, this float out represents a huge step forward. As the vessel slowly emerged from the confines of the shipyard’s massive building dock, a crowd of enthusiastic onlookers – including Minnie Mouse – gathered to witness the occasion.
This event is more than just a maritime tradition; it is a testament to the countless hours of labor and precision involved in creating a cruise ship of this magnitude. The sight of the Disney Treasure floating for the first time is a visual confirmation that the ship’s hull, superstructure, and external features are complete. Now, the focus shifts to the intricate process of outfitting the interior.
Disney’s Second Wish-Class Ship
The Disney Treasure is the sixth ship to join the Disney Cruise Line fleet and the second Wish-class vessel. She follows the Disney Wish and will be succeeded by the Disney Destiny in December 2025. Alongside her sister ships—the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish—the Disney Treasure embodies the legacy of Disney’s nautical innovation and storytelling.
Boasting a gross tonnage of 144,000 GT, the Disney Treasure measures 1,119 feet in length and 128 feet in width. With the capacity to carry 4,000 passengers and 1,555 crew members, the ship features 1,250 staterooms designed to offer the quintessential Disney experience at sea. The float out showcased the ship’s exterior design, which takes you back to the age of classic ocean liners.
The Journey Ahead
With the float out complete, Disney Treasure now enters the final phase of construction, which involves the intricate task of outfitting the ship’s interior. This process will transform the vessel into a floating wonderland, filled with themed dining areas, entertainment venues, and luxurious accommodations.
One of the ship’s most anticipated features is a bar inspired by Disney’s Haunted Mansion attraction. This venue will be a first for the cruise line and is expected to captivate guests with its spooky charm and immersive theming. Additionally, the stern of the ship will proudly display characters Peter Pan and Captain Hook, paying homage to the beloved Disney classic.
As the shipyard team works diligently to bring the ship’s interior to life, anticipation builds for Disney Treasure’s debut in December 2024. The vessel will embark on a transatlantic journey to its future home port in Florida, where it will join the rest of the Disney Cruise Line fleet.
