Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd., the prominent global cruise operator behind the brands Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, has unveiled its plans to boost internet connectivity for passengers and crew by introducing SpaceX’s Starlink high-speed internet on its ships. Starlink’s advanced low earth orbit satellite technology ensures top-tier broadband internet, enhancing the speed, capacity, and dependability of onboard internet.
Currently, NCLH is testing Starlink on the Norwegian Breakaway, with plans to progressively deploy this groundbreaking technology throughout its entire world-class fleet. Harry Sommer, President and CEO-elect of NCLH, expressed enthusiasm for providing Starlink to enhance the onboard internet experience. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the technology meets the company’s high standards of excellence, which is why the rollout is occurring in stages.
Upon successful trials, NCLH aims to equip seven more ships with Starlink by the end of the year, including the exciting new additions Oceania Cruises’ Vista, Norwegian Viva, and Regent’s Seven Seas Grandeur. A comprehensive implementation plan is in progress, with specific ship timelines and availability to be announced once finalized. Besides improving the experience for guests and crew, the increased bandwidth will offer more flexibility for onboard services and enhance the connection between the ship and shore for operational purposes.
