If you’ve cruised with MSC, you probably already know how incredible Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is. It’s hands-down my favorite private island — no crazy theme park-style attractions, no rushing here and there, just beach, sand, and plenty of relaxation on an island that never feels crowded and where you can always find a spot to chill.
Since its opening, MSC has continually added new amenities like the second food hall that debuted with the launch of MSC World America, additional housing for the crew who live and work on the island, more bars and food trucks so you’re never far from a drink or a bite to eat, and their new Marine Conservation Center.
And now, Ocean Cay is about to get its own taste of local culture.

According to The Nassau Guardian, MSC Cruises is establishing a straw market on the island, giving guests a new way to shop while supporting the local Bahamian community. The new market will feature around 20 vendors from nearby Bimini, who’ll be bringing authentic handmade goods like woven bags, hats, and other crafts straight from the islands to Ocean Cay.
The new straw market will create jobs for Bahamians, help small business owners reach thousands of cruise passengers each week, and bring a little more Bahamian culture and heart to a destination that already feels special.
For cruisers, it means more variety and more local flavor when shopping on the island. Instead of grabbing a keychain made overseas, you’ll be able to buy something handcrafted and genuine, made by the people who call this region home.
MSC has spent years transforming Ocean Cay from an old mining site into a beautiful, eco-focused marine reserve. And now, by adding this straw market, they’re taking the next step — blending sustainability with community connection.
So if you’re sailing to Ocean Cay soon, keep an eye out for when it opens. There’s no set date and no official announcement from MSC yet, but reports indicate the market stalls are already in place and vendor training is underway — meaning those cruising over the holidays might be able to pick up some Bahamian-made stocking stuffers!
