Holland America Line has a long and impressive history, going back to 1873, when it began as a shipping and passenger line operating between the Netherlands and the Americas. Originally known as the Nederlandsch-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij, with a name as long as that, it became referred to as Holland America Line.
In its early years, it transported immigrants, cargo, and mail, but over time it evolved into a premium cruise brand known for its classic style, refined service, and exploration-focused itineraries. Today, while the headquarters is in Seattle, Washington, Holland America continues to honor its Dutch heritage through ship design elements, art collections, and onboard traditions such as the famous Orange Party and Dutch Tea.
The current Holland America fleet is made up of midsize ships that carry fewer passengers than cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean Carnival, Norwegian Cruise Line, and MSC, giving them a reputation for offering a more spacious, relaxed onboard experience. Known for their elegant décor, exceptional service, and itineraries that span the globe, these ships are designed for travelers who value the destination as much as life onboard.
The fleet features several classes of vessels, each with its own unique style and features, ranging from the smaller, more intimate R-class ships to the newest and largest Pinnacle-class vessels.
Holland America Line’s R-class Ships
The R-class ships— Volendam, and Zaandam—were originally part of a series of midsize vessels designed in the late 1990s. They are the smallest in the fleet and are a favorite among loyal fans. Known for their traditional interiors, small size, and ability to navigate smaller ports that larger ships can’t access, they remain beloved for their charm and classic cruise atmosphere.
Holland America Line’s Vista-class Ships
The Vista-class ships—Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Noordam, and Westerdam—were introduced in the early 2000s as larger, more modern vessels for Holland America Line. This class of ship is also found in the Carnival Cruise Line fleet. They feature expanded balcony staterooms, more dining options, and larger entertainment venues, all while keeping the brand’s signature service and elegance.

Holland America Line’s Signature-class Ships
The Signature-class ships—Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam— are built off the Vista-class design with additional dining venues, updated stateroom layouts, and enhanced entertainment spaces. Debuting in the late 2000s, they also feature expanded spa facilities, specialty restaurants, and upgraded technology compared to earlier classes.

Holland America Line’s Pinnacle-class Ships
The Pinnacle-class ships—Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam, and the line’s flagship, the 2021-built Rotterdam —represent the largest and most contemporary vessels in the fleet. They bring a fresh, modern design with more open spaces, a wider variety of specialty dining options, entertainment venues like the World Stage, and luxurious suites. While larger than earlier classes, Pinnacle ships still carry fewer passengers than mega-ships from other lines.

Future Holland America Line Vessels
At this time, there are no new ships planned for Holland America Line, meaning the current fleet will continue to be the backbone of the brand’s operations for the foreseeable future.
